Hey there, before you can see which climbs you've already climbed and which are still on your to-do list you will have to connect with your Strava profile. It takes 15 seconds.
Nanos, the imposing limestone plateau above the Vipava Valley, is one of Slovenia’s most iconic cycling climbs. Although geographically far from Bled, cyclists staying in the famous lakeside town often target Nanos as a day trip or part of a longer tour across the country. Rising to around 1,240 meters, the climb to Nanos offers a mix of steep gradients, dramatic landscapes, and a true alpine-to-Mediterranean transition that sets it apart from many other Slovenian ascents. The classic ascent begins near Vipava or Podnanos, where the road wastes little time in rearing upwards. Gradients quickly push into 8–10% territory, with long ramps that demand strong climbing legs and careful pacing. Unlike the long, steady climbs near Bled such as Pokljuka, Nanos is shorter but far more aggressive, testing a rider’s ability to sustain power on punishing slopes. Several switchbacks add rhythm to the effort, and the higher you climb, the more spectacular the views become.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Nanos ascent is the contrast in landscapes. Starting in the warm Vipava Valley, surrounded by vineyards and orchards, the climb gradually pulls you into rugged alpine terrain. By the time you reach the plateau, the Mediterranean air has given way to crisp mountain freshness, with rocky slopes and far-reaching panoramas that stretch toward the Adriatic Sea on a clear day. At the top, cyclists are rewarded with the unique scenery of the Nanos plateau, where hiking trails, pastures, and mountain huts invite exploration. The sense of achievement is immense—few climbs in Slovenia combine such relentless gradients with such striking natural diversity. For riders based in Bled, Nanos offers not only a serious challenge but also an unforgettable glimpse into the country’s geographical contrasts.
