Boč – The Steep Giant of Eastern Slovenia

The climb to Boč, often called the “Trigl av of Štajerska,” is one of the toughest and most iconic ascents in eastern Slovenia. Rising to 978 meters above sea level, Boč dominates the landscape near Rogaška Slatina and Poljčane, offering cyclists a serious test of strength and endurance. The classic ascent begins in Poljčane, where the road soon reveals its true character. Gradients settle between 8–10% almost immediately, with several brutal ramps pushing well beyond 15%. The climb is relentless—there are very few moments of respite, and riders must be prepared for a steady grind all the way to the top. Its difficulty has earned it a reputation as one of Slovenia’s hardest short climbs.

Boč – A Hidden Wall Above Rogaška Slatina

The road to Boč is narrow and quiet, winding through dense forests that provide shade and a sense of solitude. The silence is broken only by birdsong and the sound of a rider’s labored breathing. Occasionally, the trees open up to reveal views of the Dravinja Valley and the rolling hills of Štajerska below. These glimpses provide both inspiration and proof of the height gained. At the summit, cyclists reach a mountain lodge and meadow area near the famous Boč TV tower, a prominent landmark visible from afar. The views from the top are panoramic, stretching across eastern Slovenia and even into Croatia on clear days. For many riders, conquering Boč is both a physical achievement and a symbolic milestone. Boč may not have the length of alpine climbs, but its steep gradients and relentless profile make it unforgettable. For cyclists in eastern Slovenia, it stands as the ultimate climbing challenge.
