Pokljuka – A Classic Alpine Climb from Bled

Pokljuka, the vast alpine plateau above Lake Bled, is one of Slovenia’s iconic cycling climbs. Rising from the world-famous tourist town of Bled to over 1,300 meters of elevation, this ascent combines consistent gradients, long forested stretches, and breathtaking alpine scenery. It is a climb that has featured in professional races like the Tour of Slovenia and remains a favorite among local cyclists and visitors alike. The climb begins just outside Bled, where the road immediately sets a steady tone. Unlike shorter, steeper ascents, Pokljuka is defined by endurance. The climb stretches for more than 20 kilometers, with gradients that hover consistently between 5–7%. While there are no brutally steep ramps, the length makes it a true test of pacing, especially for riders unaccustomed to sustained alpine efforts. As the road rises, the surroundings change from open views of Bled and its lake to dense alpine forests that characterize the Pokljuka plateau.

Pokljuka – A Cyclist’s Gateway to Triglav National Park

The shade is welcome in the summer months, offering relief on hot days, while the switchbacks and quiet stretches create a sense of rhythm and focus. Occasionally, the forest opens up, revealing glimpses of the Julian Alps, including the jagged peaks of Triglav National Park. Reaching the top brings cyclists onto the broad plateau of Pokljuka, home to mountain pastures, meadows, and the famous Pokljuka Biathlon Centre. The atmosphere at the summit is serene and distinctly alpine—an ideal place to rest, refuel, or continue exploring the high plateau roads. What makes Pokljuka special is its balance: steady gradients, minimal traffic, and world-class scenery. It may not be the steepest climb in Slovenia, but its length, beauty, and connection to Bled make it one of the country’s must-ride ascents for any cyclist looking to experience the Julian Alps by bike.
