Svetina – A Classic Ascent Above Celje

The climb to Svetina, a small village tucked in the hills above Celje, is one of the best-known road cycling challenges in eastern Slovenia. Famous for its steep gradients and historic character, it has been featured in local races and is regarded as a true test for any rider who loves short, punishing climbs. The ascent usually begins in Celje or Laško, quickly turning onto narrower rural roads that leave the valley behind. From the start, the climb shows its teeth—gradients of 8–10% are common, with several brutal ramps exceeding 15%. Unlike longer alpine climbs that allow a steady rhythm, Svetina is unpredictable, forcing riders to grind through steep walls with little respite. It is often compared to the “Mur de Huy” in Belgium: short, sharp, and painful.

Svetina – Celje’s Brutal Backyard Climb

The road winds upward through forests and meadows, passing scattered farms and traditional homesteads. Traffic is light, which allows cyclists to focus fully on the physical effort. In spring and summer, wildflowers color the slopes, while in autumn, the surrounding woods glow with vibrant foliage. The natural beauty helps soften the climb’s severity, even if only slightly. At the top lies Svetina, a village with centuries of history. Its small church and quiet streets provide a peaceful contrast to the suffering endured on the way up. From here, riders can enjoy views across the Savinja Valley and extend their ride toward the higher hills of Zasavje or back into Celje. Though not long, Svetina’s steepness and cultural charm make it a Slovenian classic. For cyclists in search of a pure test of climbing power, Svetina is a climb not to be underestimated.
