A Demanding Climb Beneath the Šentgotard Hills

Razbor, a small hillside settlement above Šoštanj in northern Slovenia, offers cyclists one of the more challenging yet rewarding climbs in the Šaleška Valley region. Tucked into the rolling hills that separate the Šaleška and Savinja valleys, the ascent to Razbor is a true test of climbing strength, combining steep gradients with beautiful rural landscapes and a distinctly local atmosphere. The climb usually starts in the valley near Šoštanj or Florjan, where the road immediately begins to rise. Gradients fluctuate, but long stretches of 8–10% are common, with several short ramps kicking even higher, demanding focus and endurance from riders. Unlike long alpine passes, the Razbor ascent is shorter, but it compensates with intensity. The narrow, winding road adds to the challenge, but the quiet surroundings make it perfect for cyclists who prefer routes with little to no traffic.

Steep Slopes and Scenic Views

As the climb unfolds, the scenery transitions from farmhouses and meadows to denser patches of forest, creating a mix of open viewpoints and shaded sections. The views back toward the Šaleška Valley, with its lakes and the town of Velenje, provide motivation to keep pushing upward. Along the way, the traditional rural architecture and the tranquility of the landscape remind riders that they are cycling through one of Slovenia’s authentic countryside corners. At the top, Razbor rewards cyclists not only with a sense of achievement but also with sweeping panoramas across the Savinja Valley and toward the distant peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The church and local farms at the summit add cultural charm to the effort spent on the climb. Though not as well-known as Slovenia’s iconic ascents, Razbor is a hidden gem for riders seeking steep roads, peaceful surroundings, and the satisfaction of conquering a tough local climb.
