This is the true Slovenian classic

The route covers roughly 11 kilometers from Kranjska Gora and gains over 800 meters in elevation, with gradients averaging around 8-10%, though some sections hit steeper inclines. What makes Vršič particularly unique is the variety of terrain. The northern side, especially near the top, is paved with cobblestones, adding a classic, old-world feel to the ascent and a bit of extra challenge to maintain traction and stability. On the way up, cyclists pass beautiful alpine landscapes, including views of Lake Jasna, pine forests, and mountain peaks like Prisojnik and Razor.

Climb it at least once in your life

For history enthusiasts, the pass holds significance as it was constructed by Russian POWs during World War I, and a small Russian chapel stands along the route in their memory. The descent, whether back to Kranjska Gora or down into Trenta, requires focus, as the road is narrow, winding, and busy with tourists, especially in the summer. Vršič Pass is a landmark for any cyclist in Slovenia, both challenging and rewarding, and it’s a rite of passage for cyclists who want to experience the beauty and history of Slovenia's Julian Alps up close.
